Perfumed aromatics of subtle cedar and eucalyptus mingle with sweet ripe brambly berry, setting the stage for the complexity of flavors to follow. The bright, fresh fruit—red currant and blackberry—is balanced with delicate herbal notes. Layers of vanilla, mocha, and chocolate enhance the palate, and a dusting of cocoa lingers in the finish with a ripe fruit essence. Oak and tannins gently frame the wine, integrating with additional aging.
As our 2012 Duvall’s Prospect continues to evolve, it shows itself to be a wine equivalent to those with cult status. Words don’t fully describe its depth and beauty. Though still young, it is already showing its multifaceted nature. If opened before Fall 2015, we recommend decanting for at least 30-60 minutes.
FROM KENSWINEGUIDE.COM: “This midnight blue colored blend opens with a gentle blackberry and boysenberry bouquet. On the palate, this wine is full bodied, balanced and smooth. The flavor profile is an interesting blend of blueberry with notes of toasted coconut. I also detected hints of boysenberry and black cherry. The finish is dry and its flavors and very dusty tannins so very good length. I would decant this wine in the near term and serve it with braised short ribs with pearl onions and roasted fingerling potatoes. Enjoy – Ken” Ken’s Wine Rating: Very Good+ (90)
FROM WINEREVIEWONLINE.COM:“Estate 1856, Sonoma County (California) Tzabaco Ranch Vineyards Duvall’s Prospect 2012 ($38): Rich and ripe, with power to spare, the Estate 1856 Duvall’s Prospect shows impressive layers of black fruits, ample tannins and remarkably good balance considering the obvious ripeness of the fruit. 93 Robert Whitley May 26, 2015”
The 2012 growing season started with less-than-normal rainfall in Spring, which was so helpful in moderating early-season mold and mildew issues on the tender new leaves. We experienced beautiful weather during bloom and set that helped all of our pollinated flowers create grapes. Ideal summer growing conditions – cool nights and warm afternoons – gave the fruit time to develop over a long hang time period and came into harvest in perfect condition!
Our winemaking protocol demands separate small carefully temperature regulated fermentations for each varietal providing optimum treatment for each Cabernet clone as well as for our Malbec and Petit Verdot. These wines are carefully pressed direct to barrel and are aged separately until rigorous blending trials the Spring before Summer bottling. Each individual barrel is tasted for uniqueness and provides an essential blend diversity that typifies our wines as well as an exceptional 22 month ageing period.
