Looking For A Great Getaway!
For the past several years, Estate 1856 has poured and donated wine at the annual Winesong Festival and charity auction. Produced by the Mendocino Coast Health Care Foundation, the event has raised over 8 million dollars to support life saving local health care in this underserved coastal community.
For anyone who has never had the chance to visit the Mendocino coast, it is a short two hour road trip from Healdsburg (about 3.5 hours from San Francisco), through the Anderson Valley and then up Highway 1. You can stop first in Boonville to enjoy the many fresh apple stands along the highway. We highly recommend trying the fresh pressed apple juice from the Philo Apple Farm. As you approach the coast, you’ll drive through soaring redwood trees of Hendy Woods which can also be a wee bit spooky in cloudy weather! Eventually, you’ll hit the and eventually emerge to fantastic views of the Pacific Ocean. It’s another 30 minutes north along Highway 1 as you pass the town of Mendocino and head towards Fort Bragg. The Mendocino Botanical Gardens gardens are on the west side of the road!
This is a worthy cause in a lovely setting. If you don’t have anything to do this coming Saturday (September 7th) why not give it a try! You could easily spend the night in Mendocino, Fort Bragg or several small hamlets on the coast. We highly recommend D’Aurelio’s Italian Restaurant in Fort Bragg for a fabulous dinner like your grandmother would have made. If you’re up early the next morning and looking for home cooked muffins, try the Laurel Deli & Desserts just across the street from the Skunk Train office. Their Pumpkin Apple Streusel muffins are heavenly! Mendocino Chocolate is nearby as well!
We can’t say enough about the joys of the small town of Mendocino. You can walk through quaint streets, shop in sweet little stores. Stop a moment at the Mendocino Jams & Preserves shop and try their Olallieberry Jam. It’s amazing! You’ll find lots of lovely small restaurants to enjoy! Of course, you can simply picnic at the top of the bluffs and watch the waves come in. You might also recognize parts of the town as several TV shows and movies were filmed there!
Enjoy!! Don’t forget to say Hi to Rob and Rachel who will be pouring our wines at the festival.
